The Birth Rate Crisis: Why We Should Be Learning from China’s Mistakes
We’re seeing a global trend. Fewer babies. Declining fertility rates. Increasing pressure on care systems. And while it might sound like a distant demographic issue, it’s more urgent and personal than most people realise.
Birth rates don’t fall because people stop wanting children.
They fall because society stops making it possible.
And yet somehow, in the middle of all this, we’re still giving airtime to podcasts like Diary of a CEO, where women’s education and freedom are framed as the problem. Steven Bartlett recently sat down with another man to discuss falling birth rates, and between them, they concluded that women having too much choice might be to blame.
No mention of unaffordable childcare.
No mention of parental burnout.
No mention of the mental and physical toll of raising a family without support.
When Sleep Deprivation Becomes A Workplace Risk
I’ve gone back and forth for days about whether to write this.
Not because I don’t have an opinion, but because social media doesn’t leave space for nuance, and this topic deserves more than soundbites and outrage.
What follows isn’t about excusing behaviour. It’s about asking better questions. Questions we are very good at avoiding.
The case of Dr Helen Eisenhauer has sparked intense debate. Much of it has focused on rules, probity, professional standards and personal responsibility. Those things matter. I am not disputing that.
But when I read the tribunal findings, something else stood out. Something that many people seem keen to brush past.
Sleep Deprivation and Driving
As drink drive limits return to the headlines, the conversation is rightly focused on impairment, judgement and public safety. Alcohol is regulated because we understand a simple truth. Impaired people are not safe behind the wheel.
But alcohol is not the only thing that impairs judgement.
Sleep deprivation does too.
And unlike alcohol, it is still largely invisible, unmeasured and unregulated.
